Encrypted Linux on USB key

In this post I suggest a way to have an encrypted Linux installation on a USB key, which to me is useful when I travel and I want to securely access the functionality that desktop Linux offers. I want to have no fear that what I take with me will be stolen, even if what I take with me is a full Linux OS, together with my data and maybe some online passwords saved in the browser.

The usage scenario is having a PC/laptop available, inserting my USB key, turn on the PC booting from USB, insert password and access my Linux OS. The PC can be my own laptop, or even a PC that I don’t own, provided that it can boot from USB.

DENX ELDK, U-Boot and Linux blast off in U.S. Air Force Tactical Satellite

The US Air Force launched TacSat-2 (tactical satellite) which runs Free Software developed by DENX Software Engineering: the Embedded Linux Development Kit ELDK), the U-Boot boot loader and the DENX 2.4.25 Linux tree.

Linux Device Driver Development Kit (DDK) Free

It is a cd image that contains everything that a Linux device driver author would need in order to create Linux drivers, including a full copy of the O'Reilly book, "Linux Device Drivers, third edition" and pre-built copies of all of the in-kernel docbook documentation for easy browsing. It even has a copy of the Linux source code that you can directly build external kernel modules against.
